Cabins Project

How did this kaupapa come about?

During the immediate response to COVID in 2020, Te Kahu o Taonui provided support to displaced whānau, by providing access to accommodation in either motels or motorhomes and as a wider collective of iwi, Te Kahu o Taonui also provided wrap around support. This work continues today.

As part of this kaupapa, and through its evaluation, Te Kahu o Taonui developed an impact report with the following recommendations:

Short term
  • Gain security and clarity for the current programme.

  • To seek greater iwi leadership and investment.

Medium term

  • Engage to influence policy and cohesion across government and providers.

  • Understand and document the status of housing stock being managed by Kainga Ora.

  • Build greater cohesion around the housing continuum – motels, motorhomes, cabins, houses.

Long term

  • Build independence and Mana Motuhake.

  • Build a portfolio on our whenua – providing housing security for our people.

  • Take a strategic approach to grow and diversify the housing portfolio; this may include buying land, government and commercial partnerships, developing pathways to permanent accommodation.

Te Kahu o Taonui saw an opportunity to transition from response to creating supported and future proofed opportunities for semi-permanent and permanent housing solutions for whānau Māori in Te Tai Tokerau. Te Puni Kokiri was approached, and funding was secured to undertake this kaupapa with Iwi Māori.
