Capability and capacity

The Capability and capacity document explores the evolving challenges and opportunities for iwi and hapū in environmental management across Te Tai Tokerau, highlighting the importance of capability and capacity within Resource Management Units (RMUs). It traces the historical context of Māori involvement in resource management, the impact of legislative changes, and the ongoing struggle for meaningful participation and resourcing. Through case studies and analysis, it emphasises the need for well-supported taiao teams, the integration of mātauranga Māori and tikanga, and the development of skilled kaimahi to uphold kaitiakitanga and respond to environmental degradation. The document calls for generational change, improved collaboration, and sustainable support to empower iwi and hapū as guardians of the taiao.
